What we resist persists. ~ Carl Jung

As the new year begins, I embrace peace as my guiding word. My focus will be on protecting my peace and nurturing a sense of calm and clarity.

To sustain this focus, I realize another word naturally comes into play: resilience. While traditionally defined as “the capacity to withstand or recover quickly from difficulties,” resilience, to me, is more than just recovery. It’s a mindset—one that empowers us to face challenges with strength and serenity, while moving forward with clarity and optimism.

I still remember the sting of my first big career disappointment. It was a dream job, one I felt sure I was perfect for, and when the rejection email arrived, it was like a punch to the gut. I spent days second-guessing my interview responses, replaying the experience, and wondering what I could have done differently. Looking back with the benefit of hindsight, I can see how much energy I wasted on something I couldn’t change. And, as life unfolded, that rejection became just one moment in a much larger story—a story that brought me new opportunities, challenges, and growth I never could have imagined.

Moving Beyond Bouncing Back

This experience taught me that resilience is about recovering from adversity, shifting our mindset and cultivating inner peace. Resilience helps us reframe challenges, maintain our composure, and avoid the unnecessary suffering that comes from dwelling on what we can’t control.

If the past few years have taught us anything, uncertainty is here to stay.

Resilience allows us to meet uncertainty with grace and optimism, keeping us grounded while moving forward.

The Four Pillars of Resilience

1. Bouncing Back from Setbacks

Resilience is about finding the strength to rise after a fall and keep going even when life doesn’t go as planned or the path feels uncertain and scary. This foundational aspect of resilience reminds us that setbacks are temporary and that we have the capacity to heal, rebuild, and try again.

Bouncing back doesn’t mean ignoring the challenges we face. It means allowing ourselves to process disappointment or frustration and then choosing to take the next step forward. It’s in this recovery that we build strength and confidence, knowing we’ve overcome challenges before and can do so again.

2. Control vs. Acceptance

One of the most powerful shifts in building resilience is recognizing what we can and can’t control. We often expend energy trying to change things outside our influence—whether it’s other people’s opinions, outcomes, decisions or even the weather. The only thing we can truly control is ourselves and how we respond.

Mel Robbins’ recent book, The Let Them Theory, reminds us to stop wasting energy trying to control others to meet our expectations. “Let them be who they are and focus on what you can control: yourself.”

3. Reframing Stories

Our minds are natural storytellers, especially when faced with uncertainty or setbacks, but they often lean toward worst-case scenarios—a tendency known as catastrophizing. Resilience challenges us to rewrite these narratives and tell better stories.

For example, imagine you’re invited to a networking event, and your mind immediately paints a negative picture: “I’ll show up, not know anyone, stand awkwardly in the corner, and regret going.” But if you’re making it up anyway, why not create a more positive ending? “I’ll meet at least one interesting person, have a great conversation, and leave feeling proud that I stepped out of my comfort zone.”

By reframing the story, you open yourself to possibility, replacing dread with curiosity and optimism.

4. Letting Go and Moving Forward

Letting go doesn’t mean giving up; it means trusting the path ahead. I’ve learned that life often unfolds in ways we don’t expect, and those unexpected turns can lead to incredible growth. A quote by the 13th-century Persian poet and scholar Rumi resonates deeply: “As you start to walk on the way, the way appears”.  The setbacks I faced early in my career taught me to trust that even when things don’t go as planned, something better often lies ahead.

Resilience helps us release the grip of disappointment, stop second-guessing ourselves, and stay open to the opportunities that emerge when we’re not clinging to what could have been.

Resilience as a Path to Steady Strength

Ultimately, resilience protects our sense of peace and balance. It helps us avoid the traps of worry, rumination, and self-doubt that lead to unnecessary suffering. The Buddha’s words remind us: “Pain is inevitable; suffering is optional.” By focusing on what we can control, telling better stories, and letting go of what doesn’t serve us, we create a foundation for calm, strength, and optimism.

Resilience isn’t just about surviving hard times; it’s about thriving despite them. It’s about meeting life’s challenges with curiosity and equanimity, trusting that each moment—even the difficult ones—is part of a larger, unfolding story.

four Simple Steps to Build Resilience and Protect Your Peace

  1. Pause to Reflect: Before reacting, take the pause to ask yourself: What’s in my control here?
  2. Tell a Better Story: Our brains are wired to focus on negativity as a survival mechanism. Challenge yourself to balance negative assumptions with positive alternatives.
  3. Choose Curiosity Over Judgment: When someone’s behaviour triggers you. Ask: What might be driving their actions?
  4. Practice Optimism: Remind yourself that challenges can be catalysts for change. Look for evidence from your past that setbacks often lead to growth and new opportunities.

As you move through this year, consider how you can protect your peace. Building resilience is a lifelong practice. It’s not just about bouncing back; it’s about showing up fully, letting go of what you can’t control, and trusting the journey ahead.

What’s one small step you can take today to build your resilience and protect your peace?
